Should we be concerned about the health impacts of transmission lines?

As electricity use increases, so do the number of transmission lines. Maria Arola, Specialist
from Fingrid, says that it’s safe to live near transmission lines.

Fingrid’s mission is to guarantee a reliable supply of electricity for society. This means ensuring the disruption-free availability of electricity under all circumstances. It is therefore wise to prepare for potential crises, and this preparedness is also expected from the population at large.

Transmission lines are so wide that there is sometimes interest in installing solar panels along them. However, this is not allowed for safety reasons, says Fingrid Expert Max Isaksson.

The right attitude is key when working at heights, says Esa Kärnä, Expert at safety company Kärnä Oy.

Last autumn, Fingrid issued the occupational safety campaign Triple Jump Towards Zero to employees on its worksites. The campaign got positively out of hand, and employees filed a record number of occupational safety reports.

A record amount of proactive occupational safety work was performed at Fingrid
worksites in 2024.

When working near a transmission line, a crossing statement from Fingrid is always
required to ensure safety. The project does not need to cross a transmission line; a crossing statement is required when the project is near a transmission line. The processing time for crossing statements is currently four months, says Expert Heidi Oja from Fingrid.

The safety of conductor works at Fingrid worksites is based on thorough planning,
teamwork and continuous supervision. Every employee plays a key role in managing risks, as even the smallest mistake can cause serious danger.

Fingrid invites the persons in charge of electrical work of its major service providers to meetings a few times a year. The aim is to harmonise operations and provide feedback on how the legislation works in practice.

Electrical and occupational safety on Fingrid’s worksites is ensured by carefully
planning tasks in advance, considering the risks and taking a moment to think before starting work. Fingrid invites everyone working on its sites to take part in an
occupational safety competition where the most active worksites will be rewarded.
