Record-breaking wave of investment in substations

Fingrid has more than a hundred substation projects in progress over two years, and the portfolio of projects underway is worth more than EUR 430 million. One key factor behind this boom is the green transition, which is taking Finland towards a carbon-neutral economy.

Fingrid currently has around 30 substation projects in progress in various parts of Finland. The construction of wind power and customers’ connection projects are the driving forces behind these investments. Fingrid’s first digital substation is under construction at Pernoonkoski in Kotka.

Fingrid has made an investment decision concerning construction of the 400 kV Forest Line through Finland. The transmission line will run from Petäjävesi to Muhos and strengthen electricity transmission connections in the north-south direction.

Renewing a main grid hub

The end of August was an historic moment at Alajärvi substation, as the last air blast circuit breakers in the main grid were removed from use as part of the substation renewal project. Project Manager Sami Mäki and Expert Heikki Porkka, who planned the transmission outages, have been involved in the different stages of this substation.
