The latest addition to Fingrid’s HR unit, a software robot called Tero Tiima, has been introduced to routine payroll administration tasks. This will provide the staff with more time for personal encounters. It also speeds up the payroll process and reduces the number of human errors.
The Smart grid working group appointed by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has published its interim report. The main message is that, in the future, consumers will have more opportunities to participate in the electricity market and be able to influence their electricity bill to a greater extent. A smart electricity system will provide actors with more possibilities, and is a cost-effective way to respond to the challenges of the energy transformation.
The end of August was an historic moment at Alajärvi substation, as the last air blast circuit breakers in the main grid were removed from use as part of the substation renewal project. Project Manager Sami Mäki and Expert Heikki Porkka, who planned the transmission outages, have been involved in the different stages of this substation.

Remote-controlled drones are rapidly becoming more common for professional use. A battery-powered drone equipped with a high-quality camera and GPS locator, also known as a mini helicopter, helps Fingrid experts collect location information and do surveying work.
Following closure of the Elektra electricity museum, its contents will be transferred to the Museum of Technology collections. One particular aim was to keep the main grid collection, which describes the construction and maintenance of the main grid, as a single entity. Part of the collection will be displayed in the new Land of Technology exhibition opening in October.
Modernisation of the Rautarouva (Iron Lady) line, which is the oldest section of Finland’s main grid, is nearing completion. Work to renew the 82-kilometre Koria-Ylilikkälä power line is currently in progress. The 110-kilovolt power line is being dismantled and replaced with a new 400-kilovolt line.
Fingrid and Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) have begun preparations to connect Olkiluoto 3 to the main grid. The connection will require special arrangements because, once completed, Olkiluoto 3 will be considerably larger than earlier electricity production units.
Travelling wave monitors will be installed on 220/110 kV substations in northern Finland this autumn. In addition to more accurate fault location, the devices reveal hidden faults that can be repaired before a real fault situation even occurs. The monitors are manufactured by Qualitrol and will be installed by Siemens.
Keijo Tujunen, who made a long career at Imatran Voima, was one of the first true transmission line people. This notable and widely known man celebrated his 100th birthday in March.
